SANTA FE, N.M. — Crews in Santa Fe are preparing to begin controlled blasting operations at the Caja del Rio Landfill as part of an ongoing effort to expand future waste disposal capacity.
The first blast is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, between 2 and 3 p.m. Officials say the work will remove basalt rock to make room for the construction of new landfill cells, supporting long-term waste management needs for both the City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County.
Landfill operations will be temporarily suspended before and after each detonation. Incoming vehicles will be held at the entrance until crews confirm the area is clear and safe to resume activity.
A warning horn will be used in advance of each blast to alert workers, customers, and anyone in the area.
Officials say this is part of a larger, ongoing project, with similar blasting operations expected several times throughout the year depending on weather and operational conditions.
Crews will continue coordinating with emergency responders, nearby property owners, and other stakeholders ahead of each planned detonation.
