Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Albuquerque police are now investigating a homicide after a man injured in an earlier assault has died. Officers first responded on June 11 around 5 a.m. to a report of a person who had been battered near a smoke shop on San Pedro Drive Southeast. When they arrived, they found 46-year-old Dwayne Burwell suffering from life-threatening head injuries. Police say he had been struck with a baseball bat. Burwell was transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition for several days. Investigators later confirmed he died Sunday, June 14, as a result of those injuries.The case has now been officially upgraded from an assault to a homicide investigation. Detectives are continuing to gather information and work to determine what led to the attack. No arrests have been announced.
