ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR) crews recently assisted in the rescue of Atlas, a dog weighing between 120 and 130 pounds, after he became too exhausted to complete a difficult hike on a mountain trail.
According to BCFR, the rugged terrain made the rescue especially challenging. Responders hiked into the area and took turns carrying Atlas before eventually securing him in a Stokes rescue basket for the trip down the mountain.
The rescue operation covered approximately four miles and took nearly five hours to complete.
Despite the lengthy ordeal, Atlas was not injured and was safely reunited with his family after reaching the trailhead.
The rescue has also prompted a reminder for pet owners heading into the mountains. Outdoor experts recommend bringing plenty of water, watching pets for signs of exhaustion, and remembering that the return trip can be just as demanding as the hike in.
For Atlas, the challenging day ended with a safe trip home and plenty of praise from his rescuers.
