Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — New Mexico’s green chile season is running short this year as growers deal with a significant drop in production. At Rosales Produce in Albuquerque’s North Valley, owners say they’re selling out of green chile by midday, moving nearly 8,000 pounds a day before supplies run out. The New Mexico Chile Growers Association says record-breaking heat stunted crop growth this summer, while an early surge of grasshoppers damaged fields and spread disease. Recent rains have provided some relief but have also made it difficult for farmers to harvest. Growers say customers hoping to buy chile this season should plan to arrive early, as demand continues to outpace supply.
