Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Albuquerque’s City Council has rejected a proposed gross receipts tax increase during Monday night’s meeting. The ordinance would have ask voters to decide on a tax increase in November that would have raised the city’s sales tax rate from 7.625% to 8.113% and would generate roughly $113 million annually for city worker pay and community projects. Those councilors who voted against the measure argued that the increase would add up over time, especially for working families.
Supporters which included Council President Klarissa Peña and Councilor Brook Bassan who sponsored the bill, said most people would barely notice the change. The final vote was 5-4 against the ordinance.
Back in March, a similar proposal was also rejected.
