Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –New Mexico is now home to the nation’s largest wind farm as the SunZia Wind Project began operating this month. The wind turbines are located in San Miguel, Lincoln and Torrance counties, more than 900 combined, generating 3,650 megawatts of power and serving about 1 million homes in Arizona and Southern California. In a statement to our partners at the Albuquerque Journal, Senator Martin Heinrich praised the project’s completion saying it has been a priority of his since he took office in 2013. According to SunZia the project created more than 2,000 jobs at peak construction and more than 100 long-term operational jobs. They also say the project will have a $20 billion economic impact on NM and Arizona, $1.3 billion of which will go toward direct payments to local schools, governments and private landowners.
