Albuquerque, New Mexico — Elon Musk says “flying cars are real” after unveiling a new version of the Tesla Roadster that can briefly leave the ground using rocket-inspired technology developed in partnership with SpaceX.
The highly anticipated vehicle was revealed during a launch event at a SpaceX test facility in Texas. During a livestreamed demonstration, the Roadster traveled up a curved ramp, appeared to defy gravity, became airborne, and then landed on its wheels.
Musk said the vehicle uses ultra-high-pressure air tanks and thrusters to propel itself off the ground, describing it as the result of collaboration between what he called the world’s best car company and the world’s best rocket company.
The unveiling marks the latest chapter in Tesla’s long-delayed Roadster project. Musk said the vehicle is expected to enter production in 2028, though pricing has not yet been announced. Tesla’s website notes that the flying version is not approved for public road use.
Questions remain about how the vehicle would be regulated. According to CBS News, the Federal Aviation Administration said the Roadster does not currently meet its definition of an aircraft, while regulatory oversight of the technology remains unclear.
Industry analysts say the Roadster is unlikely to generate significant sales volume for Tesla, but could serve as a showcase for the company’s engineering capabilities and its growing collaboration with SpaceX.
