ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque Police Department says a weeklong public safety operation during the 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta led to dozens of arrests, drug seizures, and the recovery of stolen vehicles while helping protect one of New Mexico’s largest annual events.
The operation focused on areas with high visitor traffic, including hotel corridors, transit routes, and popular destinations around the city. Officers conducted high-visibility patrols and worked with hospitality partners to address concerns ranging from auto theft and narcotics trafficking to outstanding warrants and violent offenders.
According to APD, officers completed more than 1,600 proactive hotel checks at 39 hotel and motel properties throughout the city.
Among the results reported by the department:
- 20 felony arrests
- 49 outstanding warrants cleared
- Five stolen vehicles recovered
- More than 1,200 suspected fentanyl pills seized
- 20 grams of suspected powdered fentanyl seized
- 10 wanted offenders taken into custody
APD also reported zero hotel auto burglaries within the Valley Area Command during the Balloon Fiesta and, humorously noted, zero hot air balloons stolen during the event.
Police officials say the operation was designed to maintain public safety as tens of thousands of visitors traveled to Albuquerque for the annual Balloon Fiesta.
The department says it plans to continue using similar enforcement strategies and partnerships during future large-scale events.
