ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Public Schools is kicking off a series of community meetings aimed at gathering public input as the district begins planning for its future amid years of declining enrollment.
District leaders say a number of schools and facilities are operating significantly below their intended capacities, prompting a review of how schools, academic programs, and resources are distributed across the district.
The effort, known as right-sizing, will include public meetings from October through January, giving parents, students, employees, and community members an opportunity to share priorities and concerns.
APS officials emphasized that no final decisions have been made and that the current phase is focused on listening to the community and gathering feedback before any recommendations are developed.
“Right-sizing” discussions come as enrollment at APS has steadily declined in recent years, a trend seen in school districts across the country.
The first community meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. at Cibola High School, with additional meetings planned at high schools throughout Albuquerque.
Among the issues expected to be discussed are:
- School enrollment trends
- Use of district facilities
- Academic programs
- Resource allocation
- Long-term planning for APS schools
District officials say feedback collected during the meetings will help shape future recommendations about how APS can best serve students in the years ahead.
