Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –APD held a news conference today (wed) releasing details on the officer involved shooting on May 24th of 53- year old Dwayne Wilson. Wilson’s girlfriend had initially called 911 to report that Wilson had beat her and refused to let her leave the home. The woman did escape and drove to a nearby store parking lot where she called police. She stated that Wilson had been drinking and became violent with her. She told police that Wilson was a convicted felon and he was armed with a gun. When officers arrived at the home in southwest Albuquerque they made repeated announcements to get Wilson to come out of the home. During the 22 minute encounter Wilson exited and re-entered the home several times and at one point had a gun in his waistband. Officers repeatedly told Wilson not to put his hands near his waistband or he would be shot. Wilson said he did not want to go back to prison and talked about suicide. He then grabbed the handgun from his waistband and pulled it upward. An officer fired two rounds at Wilson striking him once. Wilson remains in the hospital and when released will be booked into MDC. Among other charges, he faces kidnapping, aggravated battery against a household member, aggravated assault on a peace officer, and a felon in possession of a firearm. The officer remains on leave.
