ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Police say they’re getting new reports of residents receiving disturbing texts and calls from people pretending to be members of a cartel.
According to APD, the scammers are using graphic messages and spoofed phone numbers to pressure victims into sending money or purchasing gift cards. Investigators say the messages are meant to intimidate and create a sense of urgency.
Police advise anyone who receives these texts or calls not to respond, share personal information, or send any money.
APD says anyone who feels threatened or unsafe should call 911.
Scams can also be reported to the department’s non-emergency line at 242-COPS (2677).
