Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — At a hearing on Sept. 30th a Texas House committee will look into annexing one or more counties from New Mexico. New Mexico State Rep. Dr. Elaine Sena-Cortez said, “Because we have felt overregulated and penalized, and we produced 52% of the state’s budget, people have felt disregarded here and because of that, they’ve made comments about annexing to Texas.” Back in 2021, former New Mexico State Senator Cliff Pirtle proposed a joint resolution to allow counties to secede from the state, since the move is technically not included in the New Mexico state constitution. The resolution failed, but has been introduced again since— multiple times.
