Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Fifteen young bears are currently in the care of the Land of Enchantment Wildlife Foundation. Most of the cubs were born this year. The Department of Wildlife said it has been a big uptick in bears coming to lower elevations for food and water this summer. Those traveling, hungry bears looking for food near people and homes have led to a huge summer spike in bear encounters across New Mexico. It’s also put a big strain on the local non-profit that’s struggling with some bare necessities while trying to give wild animals a second chance. The goal is eventually to get these bears back where they belong. However, getting 15 animals up to weight not only takes food, but a lot of money. The foundation said it’s currently spending about $1,300 a week just to feed them, and is actively seeking donations.
