Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) A 37-year old Santa Fe man was arrested after and hours long situation in Santa Fe which required the intervention of the police SWAT Team. This morning at approximately 5:40 am, the Santa Fe Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team arrested Elder Omar Mencius-Yax, 37 after he barricaded himself inside a residence on Joshua Lane.
The incident began Friday night at approximately 11:30 p.m., after 911 operators received a call reporting a tenant, identified as Mr. Mencos-Yax, had fired multiple rounds from a handgun inside a residence and threatened the caller by pointing the weapon at them.
Upon arrival officers made contact with the reporting party to gather additional information and at approximately 12:15 am an emergency alert was issued to the community asking folks to avoid the area due to police activity.
Officers began issuing verbal announcements directing Mr. Mencos-Yax to exit the home. Contact was made with Mr. Mencos-Yax via telephone and officers observed him to be impaired, slurring his speech and faced challenges communicating with him.
He did not follow commands to exit the residence.
The SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiations Team, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, were activated and responded to the scene to resolve the situation.
After nearly six hours, the SWAT Team arrested Mencos-Yax without further incident. No injuries were reported.
Mr. Mencos-Yax was transported to the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center and booked on Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Shooting at Dwelling or Occupied Building, Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon, Resisting Obstructing and Evading and Officer.
