Las Cruces, NM (KKOB)- Felipe Hernandez, the former Las Cruces police officer who was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death in 2023 of 45-year-old Teresa Gomez, was sentenced to 9-years in prison this morning, in a Las Cruces courtroom. Judge Richard Jacquez ordered Hernandez to serve six years in prison for the voluntary manslaughter charge and five years for discharging a firearm. Jacquez suspended two years of the sentence and instead will serve that time on parole for a total of 11 year sentence. He was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.
District Attorney Fernando Macias, speaking before the court said Gomez was “a person, a mother, a daughter, and a human being who was loved and didn’t deserve to die.”
Hernandez’s wife and sisters asked to address the court, requesting to the judge mercy for his sentence.
