Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Flu cases are climbing fast across New Mexico, and it’s putting pressure on local hospitals. UNM Hospital confirms it is at full capacity as medical centers work to keep up with demand.
UNMH and Lovelace Medical Center say they’re being inundated with patients dealing with severe flu symptoms. Presbyterian Hospital, also reports a busy week, treating more than 1,700 flu patients, though it has not reached its limit.
State epidemiologist Dr. Chad Smelser points to low flu vaccination rates—only one in five eligible residents has been vaccinated this season. Medical providers say emergency rooms should be reserved for people with complications or conditions such as asthma.
