ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories will conduct a controlled explosives test Wednesday, January 7, at its Thunder Range site on the south end of Kirtland Air Force Base. The test is scheduled between noon and 3 p.m.
Officials say some Albuquerque residents may hear an explosion or see black smoke and dust briefly above the base following the experiment. Sandia reports the test supports its national security mission and will be carried out under strict safety measures, in compliance with environmental regulations and facility permits.
The lab notes that all hazards associated with the test are controlled. Timing could change depending on weather conditions.
