ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Fernando Lovo is leaving the University of New Mexico to become athletic director at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Colorado Board of Regents approved his contract Monday, which begins January 1 and runs through December 31, 2030.
Lovo will earn $1.2 million annually—$600,000 base salary, $300,000 for media activities, and $300,000 for community relations—with additional incentives possible.
His departure comes after just over a year at UNM, where he signed a contract through 2029. During his tenure, Lovo made two major hires that reshaped Lobo athletics: football coach Jason Eck and men’s basketball coach Eric Olen. Eck recently signed an extension, but Lovo’s exit could make it easier for other programs to pursue both coaches. Lovo also oversaw facility upgrades and pushed for increased fan engagement during his short time in Albuquerque.
