SANTA FE, N.M. — The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) has extended its closure order for the Headquarters Well camping area in the Española Ranger District through December 31, 2026, citing resource damage caused by unauthorized long-term camping, vandalism, and trash dumping.
The closure, originally issued in June 2024, prohibits camping, being in the area after sundown or before sunrise, and using any road or trail in the closure zone during those hours. While the order remains in effect, SFNF will conduct restoration work and implement a long-term management plan.
Violating the closure order is punishable by law. Exceptions apply to law enforcement, firefighters, rescue teams, and individuals with Forest Service permits.
Maps and details are available on the SFNF website under Alerts, and copies can be obtained at the SFNF Supervisor’s Office in Santa Fe or the Española District Office. For more information, call (505) 753-7331 or (505) 438-5300.
