Isleta Pueblo, NM (KKOB) – Isleta Police have a new weapon to combat DWI in the area south of Albuquerque. The new “BAT Mobile” was unveiled by the police department and will be used as part of its operations to reduce DWI in the state. The BAT mobile was awarded to Isleta PD by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and is one of just two awarded to any tribal police department in the country. “We’re only one of two tribal jurisdictions that have been granted the honor of owning one of these across the United States, and that is due to the hard work of the men and women of our Traffic Unit who are engaged with these federal grants and partnerships.” according to Isleta Police Chief Paul Szych. The BAT Mobile, is one of the most modern in the state of New Mexico. It can conduct on-site blood alcohol testing, breath-testing, with workstations for officers and even has holding areas for anyone detained during a DWI checkpoint.
Isleta PD is expected to put the unit to use throughout the year but will be very visible during the holidays and is expected to play a big role in lowering DWI crashes and deaths.
