Albuquerque, NM(KKOB) – An explosion and fire at an Albuquerque home last month has been classified as deliberate and the man rescued from inside the home has died. Albuquerque Fire and Rescue released information today on the exact cause of the explosion that destroyed the home and left several other homes damaged, in some cases severely.
According to AFR, New Mexico Gas crews, answered a call after a resident on Walker Dr NE had reported a strong odor of gas. While the technician was investigating the property next door, the home at 1025 Walker Dr, exploded. As firefighters were inside the home putting out the fire and during examination, they found that several gas lines had been intentionally altered. A message written on an interior wall was also found. Based on these observations and collected evidence, investigators determined that the explosion was deliberately set. According to the press release, “due to the extend of damage and the absence of witnesses, the specific ignition source and intent remains undetermined.”
The man inside the home was located and taken out of the residence and taken to UNMH hospital, and later transferred to a burn unit in Phoenix. Fire officials say the man has since died of his injuries.
