Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The Health Care Authority announced today that health insurance enrollment has increased 17% in NM thanks to the Health Care Authority Fund. The fund lowers premiums and out of pocket costs for people who get coverage through BeWell, NM’s Health Insurance Marketplace. Health insurance costs have risen across the country due to the loss of enhanced federal subsidies resulting in more than a million people losing coverage, however the trend in NM is moving in the opposite direction. NM’s Health Care Affordability Fund has helped keep affordable coverage options for New Mexicans. HCA’s Cabinet Secretary Kari Armijo stated in a press release, “Health insurance should protect people against medical debt, not cause it.” House Bill 4 was introduced to ensure ongoing funding that will protect coverage in the face of federal cuts. The bill is still in committee.
