Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –A bi-partisan bill to potentially ban cell phones in schools is before the legislature. Senator Crystal Brantley told KRQE, “It’s time all New Mexico schools are phone-free classrooms.” Senate Bill 23 builds on last year’s effort to make fewer distractions in school with an anti-distraction policy. That bill gave districts the ability to choose what each would do to address cell phone usage in school. Senate Bill 23 would close the gap on schools that have not implemented a cell phone policy. The legislation would be phased in over a three year period and would include exemptions for students with health issues. The bill passed its first committee Monday on a 7-2 vote. The Governor has said she will support a ban on cell phones in schools.
