RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Rio Rancho residents interested in local government have an opportunity to help shape the city’s future.
Mayor Paul Wymer is now accepting applications to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Rio Rancho City Council after District 2 Councilor Jeremy Lenentine announced he will resign effective Nov. 12, 2026.
Under the Rio Rancho City Charter, the mayor is required to appoint a qualified replacement when a council seat becomes vacant. The appointment must then be confirmed by the Governing Body, which includes the mayor and city council. The process continues until a candidate receives approval.
The position is being filled to ensure District 2 residents continue to have representation in city government. City councilors play a key role in decisions involving the city’s budget, growth and development, infrastructure projects, public safety, and other policies affecting residents.
Applicants must:
- Live within the boundaries of Rio Rancho’s District 2
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a registered voter
- Have no felony convictions
The person selected will serve the remainder of the term through March or April 2028.
The position includes an annual salary of $39,106 and eligibility for city-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage under the same terms offered to city employees.
Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2026. Residents can apply through the city’s website at rrnm.gov/D2vacancy.
Lenentine announced his resignation on Aug. 19, setting in motion the process to fill one of Rio Rancho’s seven council seats and maintain representation for District 2 residents.
