ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico United’s historic unbeaten run continued over the weekend, and while the club didn’t get the win it was seeking, the result was still enough to move United to the top of the Western Conference standings.
United played Loudoun United FC to a scoreless draw, with both teams locked in a defensive battle that lasted the full 90 minutes. Loudoun’s back line limited one of the USL Championship’s most productive attacks, while New Mexico’s defense once again rose to the occasion.
Goalkeeper Chris Shakes played a critical role in preserving the point, recording eight saves throughout the match and keeping Loudoun off the scoreboard.
The shutout also marked another strong performance from New Mexico’s defense, often referred to as the “Burque Backline,” as the club secured yet another clean sheet.
While a draw wasn’t the ideal outcome, other results around the league worked in United’s favor. Following a loss by Orange County SC, New Mexico United climbed into first place in the Western Conference for the first time this season.
The club’s recent form has been among the best in the league. The draw extended United’s unbeaten run to 12 consecutive matches across all competitions, further solidifying its place among the top teams in the USL Championship.
The standings may be even more encouraging for United supporters, as the club currently has three matches in hand on some of its conference rivals. Those extra games could provide an opportunity to widen the gap atop the Western Conference as the regular season enters its final stretch.
After 12 straight matches without a loss, New Mexico United now finds itself not only in first place but also in control of its own path in the race for a conference title and playoff positioning.
