FORT SUMNER, N.M. — New Mexico State Police have issued a shelter‑in‑place order for parts of Fort Sumner as officers search for two suspects wanted in connection with a shooting involving a state police officer.
Residents near Billy the Kid Drive and Shady Tree Drive, close to the Bosque Redondo Memorial, are being asked to stay indoors due to ongoing law enforcement activity.
Authorities are looking for 39‑year‑old Jovan Martinez and 26‑year‑old Makaela Johnson. Martinez is wanted on several felony charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault on a peace officer, armed robbery, aggravated fleeing, conspiracy involving a stolen vehicle, and harboring a felon. Johnson also faces multiple felony conspiracy charges.
Investigators say the suspects’ phones were last traced to the Fort Sumner area, prompting multiple law enforcement agencies to join the search.
