Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –A new Public Safety Power Shutoff alert system is being launched by PNM to keep customers in High Fire Risk Areas informed before, during and after extreme weather events. PNM could implement a power shutoff in areas where a combination of factors including high winds, low humidity and extremely dry vegetation could create conditions where energized power lines could contribute to a wildfire. PNM says the alert system will follow a tiered sequence including an “advisory” two days before severe weather conditions are forecasted. A “watch” would be one day before severe weather conditions are forecasted and a “warning” would be real-time weather forecasts. PNM says a decision to implement the power shutoff will be made quickly but may still be avoided. Customers could expect extended power outages in those situations.
