Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The La Tuna federal prison complex, located in Anthony, Texas, will be shutting down according to an announcement by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. The reason for closing the prison is due to the deteriorating conditions of the buildings, decades of deferred maintenance and staffing challenges. The announcement by the Bureau of Prisons indicates that the staff will be laid off and not reassigned as has been done with other federal prisons but the exact date for when the prison will be closed hasn’t been disclosed. La Tuna currently houses 551 men at the low security prison and 161 inmates at the adjacent minimum security camp. Many residents from Doña Ana County work at the prison which is just across the Texas-New Mexico line.
