Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –APD released detailed information today on an officer involved shooting that took place in late May. On May 26th officers were called to the 1500 block of 8th street after receiving a 911 call from a man asking for a welfare check on his friend, Jose Armas. When officers arrived they found three individuals trying to get Armas to come out of the apartment. Officers then observed a firearm in Armas’ hands and drew their weapons. Officers made numerous attempts to get Armas to come out of the apartment… At one point the upstairs window to the apartment was opened and Armas fired a gunshot at a police unit where an officer had just exited. The bullet went through the passenger side window and lodged inside the driver side door. Minutes later Armas opened the front door and officers attempted to take him into custody but attempts failed after a non-lethal projectile hit Armas. He retreated back into the apartment. Once again Armas stepped outside the apartment and fired shots into the air where he was then shot by officers. Armas died at the scene. APD will continue to investigate the shooting and the Multi-agency task force will forward the case to the district attorney’s office to make a determination of any criminal charges.
