LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The treasurer of the Republican Party of New Mexico has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash earlier this week in Las Cruces.
Authorities say Kimberly Skaggs, 54, is facing felony charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality and tampering with evidence. She was taken into custody on June 24 and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond.
According to investigators, the crash happened on June 22 along Fairacres Road, where a bicyclist was struck and killed. Witnesses reported that the driver left the scene.
Police say they used traffic cameras and other investigative tools to identify the vehicle involved, described as a black Cadillac Escalade. The vehicle was later traced to Skaggs’ residence, where authorities reported finding damage consistent with the crash.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing.
Skaggs has served in several political roles in New Mexico, including as treasurer of the state Republican Party. Following her arrest, her name and photo were removed from the party’s website.
No additional details about the victim have been released at this time.
