SANTA FE, N.M. — A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a recent shooting at the Santa Fe Place Mall, according to Santa Fe police.
Officers say Cesar Deras, of Santa Fe, was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after calling the Regional Emergency Communications Center and indicating he wanted to turn himself in. Police located him in the 1200 block of Chestnut Street and arrested him without incident.
Deras is facing charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a handgun, and negligent use of a deadly weapon.
The arrest is connected to a shooting that occurred June 20 around 3:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe Place Mall on Cerrillos Road. Police say officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers provided aid at the scene before paramedics transported the victim to a nearby hospital. Authorities say the injuries were not life-threatening.
Investigators say the shooting followed a confrontation, and the suspects fled the mall before officers arrived.
Police are continuing to investigate and are still working to identify and locate a second suspect believed to have been involved.
