Las Cruces, NM (KKOB) – A man is jailed in Doña Ana County after several explosions were reported in a desert area just south of New Mexico State University at the Tortugas Dam.
Police reports indicate that 46-year old David Curtis had parked a camping trailer next to the dam which is state land owned by the Elephant Butte Irrigation District. Callers to 911 reported hearing several explosions in the area and when NMSU police arrived, they found Curtis and his son were living in the trailer on state land and he had been exploding pipe bombs in the area.
A search warrant of the trailer resulted in finding piping, chemicals, fuses and other materials for making explosive devices. Curtis also has a criminal history including an arrest in Texas for possession of stolen explosive materials.
He will remain in the Doña Ana County Detention Center without bond until his case goes to trial.
