Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – A proposal to increase the city’s Gross Receipts Tax rate failed by a vote of 8-1 last night during the Albuquerque City Council meeting. The proposal sponsored by City Councilors Brook Bassan and Joaquin Baca would have raised the tax from about 7.6% to 8.1% and generated around $113 million a year. The money raised would have been used for infrastructure projects around the city, reduce city fees and give raises to the lowest paid city employees. During the discussion on the proposal an amendment proposed by councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn would have actually reduced the increase and only raise around $30 million a year. At that point, all the city councilors including Bassan and Baca voted against the final version of the measure.
