Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The NM Environment Department has launched their Harmful Algae Bloom Advisory Map for monitored lakes across NM. Harmful algae blooms can pose potential health risks to people and animals. The blooms can appear as blue, bright green, brown or red and my resemble floating grass clippings on the water’s surface. you’re advised to avoid drinking untreated surface water or getting it in your mouth and swimming is not recommended near visible algae blooms. Current NM lakes on the warning list include Quemado Lake in Catron County, Clayton Lake in Union County and Lower Charette Lake in Mora County. The peak season for algae blooms is July through November.
