Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – The City of Albuquerque is expanding its wildfire strategy in the Bosque in an effort to prevent wildfires as the fire danger continues to be elevated and firefighters prepare for increased activity heading into the Fourth of July weekend.
Among the increased enforcement activities are:
- More patrols around Bosque trails and open spaces during periods of elevated fire danger
- Additional fuel reduction projects to remove vegetation that can feed wildfires
- Expanded use of fire detection sensors capable of identifying heat, smoke and flames
The city hopes adding more boots on the ground, increased use of technology aimed at detecting fires faster will help in reducing the chance they grow out of control. During the holiday weekend. officers will patrol on foot, bicycles, ATVs, and drones to discourage activities that can spark fires such as using fireworks during the holiday.
The technology has already proven effective by alerting responders to some fires before 911 calls come in. Officials are now expanding the network, with plans for additional sensors in high-risk areas throughout the Bosque.
