Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – The boyfriend of a woman shot over the weekend has been arrested after she died at the hospital. 33-year old James Candelaria is now at MDC accused of shooting Destiny Benavidez on Saturday at a residence in the 2100 block of Edith Blvd SE.
Officers were called to the residence by Candelaria’s sister, who lived next door, and called 911 to report that Destiny Benavidez was on the floor bleeding inside her brother’s apartment.
According to police, family members told them that Candelaria and Benavidez had been drinking alcohol prior to the shooting. Candelaria told detectives he blacked out and woke up with Benavidez in his arms.
According to pollice, Candelaria had initially denied he owned a gun but police later determined he had taken the gun out of the home after the shooting. Benavidez died yesterday so Candelaria is now charged on an open count of murder.
