The vote was close, but schools within the New Mexico Activities Association voted to allow students the opportunity to transfer to another school without penalty. Once the transfer happens, they would immediately be eligible for varsity sports but this only applies to the first transfer. This does not apply to homeschool and charter school students. If a student tries to do a second transfer they will not be eligible for varsity participation for a full calendar year. The final vote was 67-60 in favor of the bylaw change. It will go into effect this coming school year. Critics worry the change could strengthen powerhouse athletic programs, while supporters argue it could push other schools and coaches to improve.
