Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — New Mexico’s governor is working to elevate the state’s role in presidential elections. Michelle Lujan Grisham is asking national Democratic leaders to move the state’s primary earlier on the calendar. Backers say the shift could give New Mexico voters more influence and bring presidential candidates to more communities across the state. The plan would require approval from the Democratic National Committee and a change in state law. Republicans say their current rules would not allow a similar move before late March. A final decision from Democrats is expected later this summer.
