ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Drivers across New Mexico are seeing some relief at the pump following the Memorial Day holiday, though fuel costs remain higher than this time last year.
According to AAA New Mexico, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is now $4.24, down 26 cents from last week. Despite the decrease, prices are still $1.36 higher than they were a year ago.
Prices continue to vary across the state. Farmington has the highest average gas price at $4.56 per gallon, while Las Cruces has the lowest at $4.04.
Nationwide, the average price for regular gas stands at $4.42 per gallon, also down from last week but still above year‑ago levels.
AAA says declining crude oil prices have contributed to the recent drop, but global factors could quickly push prices back up.
With the summer travel season now underway, increased demand is expected to keep prices elevated, with possible fluctuations in the weeks ahead.
