SANTA FE, N.M. — State officials are warning New Mexicans to be cautious as new Medicare cards are being distributed to eligible recipients across the country.
The card reissuance, led by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is aimed at improving security and reducing identity theft and fraudulent billing. The update affects about 1.3 million beneficiaries nationwide, though not all Medicare recipients will receive a new card.
Officials say scammers often take advantage of situations like this, attempting to contact people and request personal or financial information. They emphasize that official Medicare communications about replacement cards are sent by mail only. Beneficiaries are not required to activate their card or pay any fee to receive one.
State leaders say recipients who get a new card should update information with healthcare providers, securely dispose of old cards, and review Medicare statements for any unusual activity.
Anyone with questions or concerns about possible fraud can contact the New Mexico Senior Medicare Patrol program at 800-432-2080 or visit the state’s aging services website.
