Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — On Thursday Judge Britt Baca ruled that Alexis Bernal can have unsupervised time with her child, who is being cared for by the child’s father. The Albuquerque mother had admitted to abusing her one-year-old daughter by pleading guilty to two counts of child abuse in a 2024 case where she took her daughter to the hospital with severe injuries. At UNMHospital she told doctors her baby’s leg got stuck in a carrier, but the claim didn’t match the injuries. Doctors found evidence of several injuries over time, including a broken arm, leg, and foot, along with broken ribs, bleeding gums, pulled neck muscles, bruises, and scratches. The judge granted Bernal a conditional discharge, meaning that if she completes five years of supervised probation and attends parenting classes, she will not do prison time. In court, the baby’s father said his daughter is healing, but shows signs of PTSD.
