MOUNTAINAIR, N.M. — New Mexico State Police are leading an active hazmat investigation following a deadly exposure incident at a residence in Mountainair.
Authorities say they responded around 11 a.m. to assist the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office on what was initially reported as a possible overdose involving an unknown substance.
When first responders arrived, four people were found unresponsive inside the home. Three of those individuals were pronounced dead. One surviving occupant was transported to a hospital for treatment.
During the response, 18 first responders were exposed to the substance and began experiencing symptoms, including nausea and dizziness. All 18 responders, along with the occupant, were taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where they are being evaluated, monitored, and quarantined. Two of the responders are reported to be in serious condition.
Hazardous materials teams, including Albuquerque Fire Rescue, are working to identify the substance involved. Investigators say early findings suggest the substance may be transmitted through contact and is not believed to be airborne.
State police say a secure perimeter has been established, and the incident is contained to the residence. Officials emphasize there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
