Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – We’re learning more about scammers in New Mexico, and they’re getting more brazen with new AI technology…even trying to cheat our State Treasurer
New Mexico State Treasurer Laura Montoya says there are a variety of new scams making the rounds – and AI is behind it…right down to someone trying to impersonate her, while communicating with her on the line. She says AI was used to copy her and that she has reported the incident to the Department of Justice after she recording the interaction. She says that thanks to AI people’s voice can be cloned to steal your bank information and make incoming calls look like they’re coming from legitimate numbers. Fraudulent call centers are also operating, with scammers posing as bank employees.
Banks are urging customers to never share sensitive information over the phone, to hang up if you suspect a scam and to get a hold of your bank directly if you get one of these calls.
You can find more information by going to the New Mexico Department of Justice website.
