ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico United’s historic unbeaten run came to an end Saturday night as San Antonio FC earned a 2-1 victory at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park.
The loss snaps United’s streak at 13 consecutive matches without a defeat across league and cup play.
While the result brought an end to one of the club’s best stretches of the season, players and coaches expressed confidence that the setback will not derail their championship aspirations.
Head Coach Dennis Sanchez praised his team’s effort and resiliency despite the loss.
“It’s been a great run from the guys,” Sanchez said. “I have so much belief in this group. We have everything we need to lift the trophy this year.”
Team captain Greg Hurst acknowledged that the club wasn’t at its sharpest but emphasized that the loss should serve as motivation moving forward.
“We’ll be fine. It’s not the end of the world,” Hurst said. “We built up a good position, a lot of momentum, and we’ll see a reaction.”
One bright spot for United was Dayonn Harris, who scored and earned Pepsi Man of the Match honors. The goal also made Harris the fastest player in club history to score after entering a match as a substitute.
Harris said the team’s chemistry remains one of its greatest strengths.
“We’re a tight group. It’s like a family out there,” Harris said. “As long as we’re continuing to build that camaraderie and that fight for each other, I think there’s nothing that can stop us.”
Despite the loss, United remains well-positioned in the playoff race and will look to quickly return to form.
The Black and Yellow travel to face the Las Vegas Lights next Saturday before returning home on Sept. 11 to host Indy Eleven for Soccer Salutes Service Night at Isotopes Park.
