ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police arrested a suspected drunk driver Thursday evening following a head-on crash that left two people seriously injured on the city’s west side.
According to the Albuquerque Police Department, officers responded around 7 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash near southbound Coors Boulevard and Roberson Lane NW.
Investigators say a white GMC pickup truck was traveling southbound on Coors Boulevard when it crossed lanes near the Roberson Lane intersection and entered the northbound lanes while still traveling south.
The GMC then collided head-on with a silver Volkswagen.
The driver of the Volkswagen was transported to a hospital with severe injuries. A passenger in the pickup was also hospitalized in critical condition after suffering significant blood loss, according to police.
Police identified the driver of the GMC as Carlos Gonzales-Daniel, 56.
Authorities say Gonzales-Daniel fled the scene on foot following the crash but was later located and taken into custody by responding officers.
He is charged with:
- DWI resulting in great bodily harm
- Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily harm
The crash remains under investigation.
