Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – New Mexico’s Attorney General has sued the U.S. Attorney’s Office to uncover records on “fentanyl walking,” a controversial DEA tactic where agents monitored rather than seized millions of pills between 2022 and 2025 to build larger cases against drug organizations.
Attorney General Raul Torrez and the state argue that withholding these documents obstructs the state’s right to investigate and protect its citizens from federal misconduct.
The lawsuit highlights a severe local health crisis, noting that New Mexico’s fatal overdoses spiked by nearly 27% through March 2026, even as national rates dropped. At least three DEA whistleblowers exposed the practice, claiming it violated internal Department of Justice safety protocols and resulted in career retaliation for those who spoke out.
