SANTA FE, N.M. — A Santa Fe man convicted of killing his former girlfriend and her teenage son has been sentenced to the maximum penalty allowed under New Mexico law.
According to First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, District Court Judge Bryan Biedscheid Lidyard sentenced Jose Antonio Adrian Roman on Thursday to two consecutive life sentences plus 10½ years in prison.
Roman was convicted by a Santa Fe County jury on April 22, 2026, for the Nov. 13, 2023, murders of Carmen Navarrete De Gonzales, 50, and her son, Axel.
Jurors found Roman guilty of:
- Two counts of first-degree murder (willful and deliberate)
- Aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon
- Shooting at a dwelling or occupied building
According to the district attorney’s office, Judge Lidyard described the case as one of the “clearest cases of deliberate murder” he has seen during his eight years on the bench.
Prosecutors said the sentence ensures Roman will spend the remainder of his life in the New Mexico Corrections Department.
The case was prosecuted by the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office following a lengthy investigation into the double homicide that occurred in Santa Fe in 2023.
