Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Scientists at the University of New Mexico have helped identify one of the oldest Martian meteorites ever discovered. Researchers say the meteorite, known as Teghaza 001, is about 4.1 billion years old and may provide evidence that Mars once had a wetter, more Earth-like environment. The rock was recovered from the Sahara Desert and analyzed by scientists at UNM and several partner institutions. Researchers say signs of water-related alteration preserved in the meteorite offer a rare glimpse into Mars during its earliest history.
