Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — In recent years, Moose sightings have been increasing in northern communities like Chama and Taos. This has ignited the question of whether the animals are native to New Mexico. A recent study conducted by UNM shows that they are. The team combed through historical archives, including newspapers, photos, journals and other written accounts, along with ethnographic stories, songs and oral traditions from Tribal communities. They also reviewed published archaeological records of moose remains found in the region. The study concluded that moose have been present in the southern Rockies from the Early Holocene through the present. The Early Holocene began approximately 11,7000 years ago.
