SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico State Parks will increase on-the-water patrols across the state during the Fourth of July holiday weekend as part of a nationwide boating safety effort.
The enhanced enforcement is scheduled for July 3 through July 5 under Operation Dry Water, a national initiative focused on preventing boating under the influence and improving safety on waterways.
State Parks officers, working alongside the U.S. Coast Guard and national partners, will conduct patrols, safety compliance checks, and public outreach at lakes and rivers statewide.
Officials say the increased presence comes as boating activity typically rises during the holiday weekend. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol remains a leading contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities.
Under New Mexico law, operating a boat with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher is illegal.
During the operation, officers will monitor for:
- Boating under the influence
- Required safety equipment compliance
- Proper vessel operation
Violations can result in citations, fines, or arrest.
Operation Dry Water is a year-round effort that includes a national enforcement push each Fourth of July, one of the busiest times of the year for boating.
Officials say the goal of the increased patrols is to reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall safety during the holiday period.
